Description
Praziquantel, sold under the brandname Biltricide among others, is a medication used to treat a number of types of parasitic worm infections. Specifically it is used for schistosomiasis, clonorchiasis, opisthorchiasis, tapeworm infections, cysticercosis, hydatid disease, and other fluke infections.
Praziquantel is on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines, the most effective and safe medicines needed in a health system for human, animal and aquaculture.
- Benefits: Praziquantel works by causing severe spasms and paralysis of the worms’ muscles. This immobility allows the body to naturally remove or expel the parasites. It’s known for its high efficacy and can be administered in a single dose, making it very convenient.
- Application: It’s typically taken orally, in the form of tablets. The dosage and length of treatment depend on the type of infection and the patient’s condition. It’s crucial to follow medical advice closely when using this medication.
- Main Usage: Besides treating schistosomiasis, Praziquantel is also used for other parasitic worm infections like liver flukes and certain tapeworms, such as those causing cysticercosis/neurocysticercosis. It’s a choice drug due to its effectiveness and relatively few side effects.
